1982 Ferrari Mondial 8 Coupe (ECC-169)
Developed in the late 1970’s as a replacement for the 308 GT4 the Mondial was conceived as a 2+2 GT with a transverse mid-engine V8 chassis. Featuring styling by Pininfarina, the model was launched at the 1980 Geneva Salon.
The Mondial 8 was the first generation of the model and offered for roughly three years between 1980 and 1982. Production total is recorded at 703 units, with approximately 150 imported into America.
Exterior styling was considered to be conservative for a Ferrari and lacked the sharpness of line and aggressive wedge shape of the 308 GT4. None the less, the Mondial was a fresh and distinctive design that was instantly recognizable as a true exotic. Distinctive features included the wrap around front bumper, pop-up headlamps, graceful roofline and dramatic side scoops.
The upside of the design was a far more comfortable and stylish interior. A modular style instrument panel was a contemporary touch, while the traditional gated shifter was classic Ferrari. A proper racing style steering wheel sets a serious tone. Seating for both driver and passenger is both sporty and very comfortable. The rear seats are snug but usable and the overall packaging is quite practical for a sports touring machine.
The 2.9 L DOHC V8 was a development of the unit used in the 308 series and offered Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection delivering 214 HP and 181 lb ft of torque. Service access is very good for a mid-engined exotic and the Mondial is credited with having reasonable maintenance costs (for a Ferrari). The chassis design was also a first for Ferrari incorporating a detachable rear subframe for the engine/gearbox/rear suspension considerably simplifying engine out repairs.
A tubular steel chassis resides under steel bodywork, with an aluminum hood and engine cover. Steering is via power assisted rack and pinion. Suspension is handled by double wishbones with Koni dampers for each wheel. Handling is sharp and secure benefitting from the relatively long wheelbase. Mondial 8’s were originally fitted with Michelin TRX tires which require TRX specific wheels and are quite rare and expensive now. An upgrade to standard rims is a common and sensible modification.
Pricing in the USA for the 1981 introduction started at $64,000. While the absolute numbers are modest, the Mondial 8 was a sales success by contemporary Ferrari standards, its popularity being boosted by a solid reputation for reliability and reasonable maintenance costs.
The Mondial series was upgraded several times during a 13 year production run.
Each update boosted performance, but added cost and complexity in return. The original Mondial 8 specification offers a lot of value and remains one of the most affordable choices to enter into the Ferrari ownership club.
