ABOUT THE 930 TURBO
Porsche’s Turbo 911 was introduced in 1975 and proved an instant sensation. The original provided an exhilarating experience, but was not without fault, having a very sudden power curve and nasty handling at the limit.
Porsche continued development and refinement of the 930 with the 1978 update which included a 3.3 liter version of the flat six offering 300 HP and a smoother delivery, upgraded brakes, suspension retuning, and a flatter “Tea Tray” rear spoiler. The rugged 4-speed gearbox was retained until 1989, last year of production for the 930. Emissions regulations caused Porsche to withdraw the 930 from the US market in 1980. It returned in 1986 with revised tuning delivering 282 HP. Performance is eye opening with 0-60 times around 4.6 seconds and a top speed above 155 mph. Handling and road holding were improved, but the Turbo remained a challenging car to exploit fully. The latest models have lost their edgy character and many enthusiast feel the late 1980’s models offer the best overall driving character … responsive and thrilling, but reasonably well behaved.
All 930’s offered deluxe trim and standard features including AC, full leather, electric windows and premium audio components. Porsche originally planned to phase out the 930 and replace it at the top of the line with the 928 model front engined V8 GT coupe, but the exciting character of the 930 prevailed. For many fans, this is the ultimate Porsche.
