BRIEF MODEL HISTORY
The Porsche 928 was in production over an 18 year period and offers a fascinating history. Originally conceived as a replacement for the legendary 911, the 928 evolved into a remarkable grand touring sport car in its own right. Collectors have recently developed an appreciation for this exotic GT and values have risen considerably over the past few years. Clean, low mile examples are very rare as production numbers were small, especially so for late model, manual transmission cars.
Introduced in 1977, Porsche spared no expense in designing a true, clean sheet GT. The basic layout offered a front mounted V8 driving thru a transaxle with an advanced multi-link rear suspension. This “Weissach Axle” was one of the first examples of multi link designs engineered to provide positive handling corrections at speed. Styled by a team including Wolfgang Möbius and led by Tony Lapine, the 928 was a very ambitious and futuristic concept with sleek aerodynamic contours, blended body-color bumpers and fold-up headlamps. It was a stunning creation, at once all-new, but still distinctly a Porsche. Weight saving details included the poly bumper covers, aluminum doors, hood and front fenders. Weight distribution was near the ideal 50/50 and even the earliest 928’s were noted for remarkable handling. Starting at $28,000 in 1970’s money, the 928 was always expensive and never what enthusiasts expected from Porsche, factors which would limit sales all through its long production history. In typical Porsche fashion, the 928 continued to evolve thru a series of minor and major engineering refinements.
As a collector car, the 928 S has only recently gained a following. Never a big seller, the 928 was seen as not as precious as the 911 and there have been very few survivors in excellent condition. As younger collectors lacking preconceptions and realizing the awesome performance and unique style of this rare Porsche have entered the market the 928 S has developed a very strong following and seen a modest rise in value. The 928 S model is very desirable due to general affordability and lower maintenance costs compared to the later models.
