We are delighted to present this 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV coupe, with rare factory air, subject of a complete restoration with significant performance upgrades about 10 years ago and driven and shown on a limited basis since then.
The restoration was extremely through and complete and handled by the Los Angeles shop of master technician Filippo Cusimano, on a car he had personally selected for himself. Time and money issues led Filippo to sell the car to a dedicated Alfa fan who had Filippo complete the redo in 2005.
The completed car was subsequently sold to another Alfa buff, who drove occasionally and kept it in fine shape. It then came to us as a trade-in on a sensational 1991 Alfa SZ coupe we had just imported.
The restoration was extremely well documented by the original owner and the car was also featured in Hemmings Sports and Exotics magazine in August of 2008.
The restoration started with a very sound body shell which was taken to bare metal. The only rust was in the driver’s pedal and seat mount areas and this was professionally repaired and the floor panels inside and out treated to a coating of POR 15. Bodywork to remedy minor dents and surface issues was completed to a high standard and a lustrous metallic silver paint job laid on and hand sanded and finished. Looks very nice overall.
The interior was redone with a refinished dash, new headliner, new parcel shelf and many new trim bits. Seats are standard Alfa in black vinyl. The interior is very attractive, complete and correct, but does show some minor wear and typical upholstery stretch.
The engine was completely rebuilt during the restoration and runs exceptionally well now. New bearings on the bottom end, balanced, new rings. The head was re-machined with bigger valves and polished ports. Dual carbs are fitted. The valve cover has been crackle finished in Ferrari red and the engine also has many cosmetic details to admire. All synchro’s in the transmission were replaced, new bearings and seals, and the entire box was also blasted. The flywheel machined and high performance Kevlar clutch installed.
All suspension components have been upgraded or refreshed including Koni Red shocks, performance springs, polyurethane bushings, power coated arms etc. Brakes fully rebuilt, calipers powder coated etc. Gas tank was boiled and sealed.
The goal of the restoration was to reach a very attractive level of finish, not quite Concours, and to build an excellent driving car with reasonably upgraded performance and handling. This was certainly achieved.
Since the restoration the car has been well cared for and recently inspected and refreshed. The odometer shows 18K miles, believed to be the accurate mileage post-restoration. Several items such as wheels, steering wheel, bumpers etc. have been updated or returned to stock over the past few years.
Presented as a comprehensive older restoration that has been well cared for since, recently serviced, all major issues resolved, straight rust-free body, excellent paint, good interior and really fun to drive GTV. Not quite stock, but very intelligently upgraded. Not quite perfect, but pretty damned close. Ready to enjoy to the fullest and show with pride.
